Towards the Fifth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health: first high-level preparatory meeting

European governments have reaffirmed their commitment to reducing negative environmental impacts on health during three days of high-level discussions in Milan. The WHO-led First High Level Preparatory Meeting in preparation for the next Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health took place on 10- 12 March 2008.

Member states representatives, international governmental organizations, NGOs (including the Health and Environment Alliance as a representative of the health NGOs) and youth organizations addressed the following issues in a crosscutting manner:

- Inequity in Environment and Health;
- Gender issues;
- Specific needs of NIS (Newly Independent States) and SEE (Southeast Europe) countries;
- Working with new stakeholders including local authorities, private sector and youth;
- Synergies and new opportunities in working across boundaries - with a particular focus on climate change. (Established political processes will also be addressed under this priority);
- Understanding the economic influence on environment and health policy making.

The first preparatory meeting concentrated on Regional Priority Goals 1 and 2 of the Children’s Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE) and will aim to develop a conference agenda that ensures that the priority concerns for the European Environment and Health Process are adequately addressed during the 5th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health.
