The environment and lung disease

Name of the organization: European Lung Foundation

Title of the projects: The environment and lung disease

The objective of this project was to inform children aged between 5 and 11 years about outdoor air pollution, and in particular how outdoor air pollution can affect the lungs. The eventual aim is to encourage young people to play an active role in trying to reduce their impact on air pollution.

The first stage of this project was to compile the most up-to-date scientific findings on outdoor air pollution and lung health from experts within the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

This information was then digested into a format that would be appealing to children. The information was written and a character (an elf to represent the ELF) was designed in order to communicate the message.

A factsheet was then compiled, reviewed and produced. Dissemination of the fact sheet will be via the ERS to all its members, who in turn can use it to help communicate with their young patients, many of whom suffer with severe lung diseases and hence will benefit from understanding more about the effects of air pollution on them. The fact sheet will also be distributed via the Health and Environment Alliance network of organisations and be posted on both organisations’ websites.
