Child impact analysis with an evaluation of road safety and environmental measures

Name of the organization: Swedish Road Administration, Skåne Region

Title of the project: Child impact analysis with an evaluation of road safety and environmental measures

Contact: www.vv.se

The aim was to contribute to a healthier environment for children by enabling them to walk or bike more safely to school and other recreational activities, rather than their parents driving them. The project helped reduce the amount of traffic in the vicinity of schools and actively involved young people. Initially, pupils studied their neighbourhood environment, their school route, traffic and driving speeds, based upon which they then listed the different traffic situations that could arise when they moved around Annelöv. Specifically, they surveyed the pedestrian crossings and road intersections on their route and the situations that could arise, and discussed vehicle speeds. Pupils then presented their findings, following which a proposal and problem inventory based upon the findings was drawn up, which took into account engineering aspects, existing regulations, and the surrounding environment. The proposal was subsequently presented at a meeting attended by teachers, parents, and students.
