Croatia: Cloth diapers, the best solution for your baby and for the environment

Most people when they hear about “cloth diapers” immediately think of the square diapers that our grandmothers used, hand-washed, boiled, ironed... You can forget about the picture. Modern cloth diapers are comfortable, simple to use and healthy for your baby and for the environment.

Croatian NGO RODA - Parents in action is working to promote the use of cloth diapers as a healthier and more environment-friendly alternative to disposable nappies.

Did you know that disposable diapers that contain perfumes are linked to breathing problems in people with asthma? In addition, overheating by 1 C which happens in disposable diapers, at the time when little boys’ testicles are still being developed, can influence subsequent infertility.

The baby’s intimate parts are in contact with the diapers 24 hours a day, 2.5 years. Disposable diapers contain several chemicals, from the ones that enable better absorbency of the diapers, to the traces of ones that are highly toxic, like sodium polyacrylate, dioxins and TBT.

It’s evident that cloth diapers are better for your baby’s health, but also they are a lot more respectful toward the environment. Disposable diapers are third in line in quantity at rubbish dumps, after newspapers and bottles. Moreover, it takes more than 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose, and for the more expensive “ecological” disposable diapers there are no conditions for a quicker decomposition at a rubbish dump, because they are not exposed to the sun.

Also being more economical, cloth diapers are the best solution.
