Institute for Ecological Modernisation: Local Environmental Health Plans for the Municipality of Varna and for the Municipality of Devnya

The Institute for Ecological Modernisation made local environmental health plans for two cities in Bulgaria.

The Municipality of Varna (the third largest city in Bulgaria) is one of the three Eastern European pilot municipalities of the World Health Organisation in the field of local environmental health planning, and the Municipality of Devnya is unique as the most heavily industrialized one in the country.

The plans were based on the results of Health Impact Assessments and contained measures for improving the environmental conditions in view of reducing the adverse environmental impact on human health. They are strategic documents which determine the basic directions of the environmental policy of the Municipalities regarding all components of the natural and social environment and the population’s health behaviour which influence human health.
