The NGO Brussels Statement

The “NGO Brussels Statement” was written at a preparatory workshop to the Budapest conference, in December 15-16, 2003. It was organized by the European Public Health Alliance and the European ECO-Forum, and gathered 70 representatives from 50 international, European and national environmental and health citizens’ organisations. Some of their main recommendations:

Transfer of 2.5% of health spending from care and cure to prevention by 2007.

Make financial commitments to support the outcome of this meeting, especially in relation to the newly independent states (NIS) and countries of central and Eastern Europe.

Set targets and timetables for children’s health.

Implement the precautionary principle in chemical and pesticide control policy wherever substances are suspected of adverse impact on the health of children and adults.
